MARGARET SANGER: PIONEER FOR WOMAN’S RIGHTS Jenny Monroe Back by popular demand, Jenny Monroe, arts educator and thespian by training, did a dramatization of former Corning resident and leader in the women’s fight for reproductive rights, Margaret Sanger. Reproductive rights continue to be a timely topic even though Ms. Sanger was active in the cause in the first quarter of the 20th century. Jenny Monroe, as Margaret Sanger, during her return to Corning in 1966 when she gave a speech about her work as a suffragette and tireless worker for women’s reproductive rights. Robert Garrett, former West High school art teacher, shares a pamphlet that he and Marjorie Woodbury produced in 1997. It depicts the mural they collaborated on about Sanger and Katherine Houghton Hepburn's work affecting women's reproductive freedom.

Mrs. Beecher and Mark Twain We are grateful to Jenny Monroe, arts educator, thespian by training, and Road Scholar Coordinator at Watson Homestead who presented a collection of remembrances by local friends of Mark Twain. Julia Beecher, wife of the Rev. Thomas K. Beecher of Elmira's Park Church, was a special friend of Mark Twain. Following her portrayal of Mrs. Beecher, Monroe challenged the audience with some trivial pursuits regarding the Langdon-Beecher-Clemens legacy in Elmira. Jenny Monroe, portraying Mrs. Thomas Beecher of Elmira fame, shared her comments about life as the wife of the prominent Congregational preacher and friend of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain).

Bampa's House Charlotte Dugan explained the reasons why Bampa's House was established, what a comfort care home is, and the need for one in Corning. Depending on the status of renovation at the new site on E. First Street, she updated us on the progress so far. Rosemary Mullaney, Charlotte Dugan, and Mary Ann Starbuck explained why Bampa's House is needed in our area and updated us as to progress on the conversion of an historic home on East First St. as Corning's first comfort care home.

Beginning with a look at Corning’s geographical location to the history of the Corning area via seven historical periods – from B.C. to 2017. We were delighted that he was willing to come back for one more lesson bringing us into the modern era. |

Dick Russell, Executive Director for Faith in Action While most folks are becoming aware of Faith in Action, you might be surprised how much Faith in Action is doing in our community and county. Dick Russell will talk about the scope of their services as well as some new programs – such as ”Give Them a Break”, Alzheimer's caregiver respite, and ”Caregiver Canines”. More than likely you will need their services at some point or perhaps you would like to be a volunteer. Happy to have Amo Houghton at our September CAAIP meeting.

Mr. Thomas Dimitroff, Local Historian, Author, and Former Teacher of History at CFA Mr. Dimitroff will present the second part of a two part history lesson. Beginning with a look at Corning's geographical location to the history of the Corning area via seven historical periods – from B.C. to 2017. Tom's first part was so interesting no one wanted him to stop. This was the second installment to learn everything you ever wanted to know about our area from a very popular historian. September meeting with Tom Dimitroff speaking about the history of Corning/Painted Post.

Many of us have become aware that we might be eligible for veteran's benefits but do not know what may be entitled to. Dan provided an informative talk about those benefits and what we need to do to apply. A lively question and answer talk that covered many topics such as benefits for WWII Vets, who is a Vet as well as medical coverage questions to name a few.
